Lawrence J. Hirsch ist Professor für Neurologie und Attending Physician in der Neurologie, Leiter der Abteilung für Epilepsie und EEG, Ko-Direktor des Yale Comprehensive Epilepsy Centers und Ko-Direktor des Critical Care EEG Monitoring Programms an der Yale University, USA. Dort studierte er auch Medizin und absolvierte sein Internship, bevor er seine Assistenzarztausbildung und ein zweijähriges Fellowship an der Columbia University in New York antrat und erfolgreich beendete. In New York war er von 1997-2011 Mitglied der Fakultät, bevor der nach Yale wechselte, wo er u.a. auch mit Dennis Spencer zusammenarbeitete.

Er hat mehr als 150 wissenschaftliche Originalarbeiten und mehr als 100 Reviewartikel und Editorials verfasst. Sein wissenschaftliches Interesse gilt vor allem dem EEG-Langzeit-Monitoring von Hirnaktivität bei kritisch kranken Patienten, dem Status epilepticus, der therapeutischen Hirnstimulation bei Epilepsien, der Epilepsiechirurgie und prächirurgischen Diagnostik, der medikamentösen antiepileptischen Therapie und dem SUDEP (plötzlicher, unerwarteter Tod bei Epilepsiepatienten).

Prof. Hirsch hat eine Vielzahl von nationalen und internationalen Symposien organisiert. Er ist Mitbegründer und ehemaliger Vorsitzender des „Critical Care EEG Monitoring Research Consortiums“, ist Ko-Autor des ersten Atlas zum EEG bei kritisch kranken Intensivpatienten und hat mehrere Lehrpreise und Auszeichnungen erhalten. Er hat maßgeblich die aktuelle Terminologie für das EEG bei kritisch Kranken entwickelt.
